Book Review - Behram's Boat

Title - Behram's Boat
Author - Adi Pocha
Genre - Fiction
Publisher - One Point Six Technologies P Ltd
ISBN - 978-9354382215

A beautiful and completely different approach to the fictional character Behram Rustomjee. When I started reading this book, I could see the approach taken by the author which wasn't a usual one. I must appreciate his guts to have taken this route since you don't get to read a storyline like this often. I must also admit that I had fallen in love with Mr Rustomjee for the whimsical character he is.

Though he was born with a silver spoon, he gets cheated by his uncle who usurps his properties. That did not deter our man who went on to become an icon himself(not through physical earnings). He also has a caring daughter Persis.

There are few other characters. I do not want to go into it deeply.

First and foremost, I liked the narration style of the author. The way he described seekh kabab from Sarvi in Byculla wrapped in a newspaper, accompanied by onions cut on rings and sprinkled with pudina will even make a true foodie drool over this narration and the food described.

Then comes the narration of Mumbai which again is lit.

WHAT DID I LEARN FROM THIS BOOK?

I got to know about Parsi tradition which includes Navjote and how Sadra Kusti is associated with it. Sadra is the Sacred Inner Vest whereas Kusti is a Sacred Thread tied around the waist.

I also came to know that Ashem Vohu is the most basic Parsi prayer.

How did Zoroastrianism come into existence?
Why did Behram get the nickname "Buddha"?

Unlike the normal boat which is usually built to sail on seas, Behram builds a wooden boat and he wanted to take this young Parsi couple who he thought will fall in love and contribute to the growth of the tribe.

Did he succeed?

Read this funny, entertaining, gripping story of an ambitious man who was set to achieve the target at any cost which even threatens his life. It is no less than a perfect thriller fiction but with good tinge of sarcasm and comical approach.
