The Alphabet Killer

Title - The Alphabet Killer
Author - Prachi Sharma
Genre - Fiction
Publication - Half Baked Beans
ISBN - 978-93-84315-535

The Alphabet Killer is a very good attempt by the author. The story is a crime thriller. I was on to the book with great expectation and the book had lived up to it. I must say honestly that I was expecting some turn around in the end when the suspense was revealed because if you pay proper attention to the story, you might end up getting the answer well before the story got concluded.

Mia Santos, the protagonist heads The Feminist. She had a break up with her boy friend who owned the company. One fine day, Mia gets a threatening call asking her to confess about her past. When she turns deaf ear, she starts losing her colleagues one by one by way of brutal murders.

Mia seeks the help of her friend Jolene who knew about her past and in the meanwhile Damien De Silva, CID Senior Inspector comes into the picture to investigate the case. At one point, some vital clues were found.

Did it lead to the capture of the murderer? If yes, who was the murderer and what was so secret about Mia's past? Read the book to find out more.

The Apocalypse Fire

Title - The Apocalypse Fire
Author - Dominic Selwood
Genre - Fiction
Publisher - CORAX
ISBN - 978-0-9926332-7-1

The book is a real bulky one. The story spans around 363 pages with 73 chapters but having said that I have no complaints or qualms about the volume. I infact felt sad when I finished reading it as I wanted this story to get dragged forever. I have something to pacify me though - Yes. The story is not complete yet :-)

I missed reading the first part but I got to know that I need not have to worry about it as the Book 2 had its own story which would however be concluded in Book 3.

What's the Plot?

The story spans across various Nations and Continents including the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy,  Israel, Syria, Jerusalem, Russia, Switzerland etc.,

Oleg A Durov, an oil oligarch believed that The Holy Mother had chosen him? Why?

Giovanni Raspallo was a Turin Cathedral caretaker and he gets brutally murdered and the Shroud which the cathedral had goes missing. It is this event which brings our protagonist AVA Curzon into the picture. Having served MI16 earlier, AVA resigns from the job and was happily employed in the archaeological department. Jack Swinton from MI13 persuades her to join them allowing her to continue with her present job too.

In France, Amine was chased by some unknown assailants who not only gets the catacombs from him but also murders him.

AVA and the SAS team intercepts Mercedes which was driven by the killer of Giovanni near Nuremberg. AVA is now joined by Mary. Mary gets injured in the operation and the killer - Lunev escapes the scene.

Nikolay,an insurgent from Moscow hacks the server of The White House and uploads some videos. Richard Easton who sits in the West Wing of The White House had some ancient books which others fails to notice.

AVA gets serious and starts investigating. She along with Mary and Ferguson stumbles upon few evidences and was extremely shocked when she came to know about the involvement of Russian Intel Unit - GRU.

Private Danny Aronov gets hold of Rocket Launcher Unit from Israel controlled Syria.

AVA on the other hand ventures into Durov's residence and stumbles upon something which she never thought existed. Lunev spots her but AVA manages to escape.

Now AVA gets introduced to Sir Mark Jenningswho discusses about SKOPTSY belief of Durov. What was it? With few incidents, AVA now starts suspecting her superior Swinton. She disguises herself as Sophie and meets Jose Ramos - Director of Bucephalus Gallery requesting him to set up contacts with Iraq and Syria for the artefacts business.

An attempt on her life takes place right outside her house which claims the life of her neighbour Julia. AVA gets a tablet from Israel which came from URI who wanted her to stay away from Durov. Is the Security of State of Israel involved in some conspiracy?

AVA sets off to Paris to meet Prof Hamidou to learn about Aramaic inscriptions which she stumbled upon and gets attacked in the tube station. Luckily she escapes and the assassin gets killed.AVA and Ferguson were shocked to find the Professor missing but stumbles upon an ancient letter. They again get chased by some unidentified men. Who was tracking them so perfectly?

AVA now gets a call from Mary who asks her to come to Rome immediately. On her arrival, she was told that Durov was there as the guest of Prince & Grand Master of Malta. She trespasses the property and gets caught. She stumbles upon some artefacts inside the Palace.

AVA now travels to Jersualem and gets attacked by Durov. URI saves her and warns her not to muddle with Durov any further. AVA gets back to London and tries to decipher the clues she had with her though she lost hope since Durov had Vellum apart from the Shroud.

She decides to confront Swinton but realises he always tried to save her and it was Sir Jennings who worked for Durov. In the dual both Swinton and Jennings gets killed and AVA gets saved by the Prince & Grand Master of Malta.

AVA finds out about the Apocalypse Durov had planned.

Now, if you think I have revealed the entire story - STOP. Even though I gave information from almost 300 pages, the best part of the story only starts from here and I would not make this blog review a spoiler by revealing them because the real suspense and the interesting part of the story starts from here which would surely make it a nail biting finish. Buy the book and find out what exactly happened in the end - Whether AVA was successful in stopping The Apocalypse?

A classic book on how honest officers gets framed despite their sincere attempt to clean up the system by eliminating the criminals. Dr Sharma has used all his experience having served the Indian Govt as a Civil Servant which is clearly evident in this book.

The story begins with Madhu approaching Advocate Sukumar who has an impressive record of more than 95% success rate in his appearance to save his son Police Officer Amrit who has been fabricated in a case with false evidence. Adv Sukumar charged Rs,25 Lakhs per appearance which was too expensive for Madhu to bear but found the backing of an NGO based in Switzerland.

A thorough investigation by Adv Sukumar reveals the background of Madhu who got married to Upendra despite defeating him in the college election. They gave birth to Amrit and when he was just 2 years old, Upendra gets fabricated with false allegations and was sentenced to jail where he gets killed.

Madhu and Amrit now finds shelter from Jayant who is none other than Madhu's brother who was a Police Officer himself. He later gets promoted as an ACP. When he tries to halt some illegal activities, he gets killed as well. Amrit was just 6 years old then and he witnesses the brutal murder.

Amrit vows to become a Police Officer despite having the intelligence of either becoming a Doctor or an IAS Officer. The people who were responsible for the death of his father and uncle comes back to haunt him as well. How did he deal with them and why does an NGO from Switzerland has paid fees to Adv Sukumar to appear for Amrit is the story.

Some of the characters which played a vital role in shaping of the story includes Sohan, Aditya, Smita, Shobha, Nisha, Sandy,Adarsh,Aman,Chaddha, Kakosa,Ajay.

The story has made all the above mentioned characters live in front of my eyes till it ended which shows how meticulously the story has been penned by the author. A great read, I must say.

Private Delhi

Title - Private Delhi
Authors - Ashwin Sanghi and James Patterson
Genre - Fiction
Publisher - Arrow Books
ISBN - 978-1-784-75667-3

This is the second book in the Private series by the authors - Ashwin Sanghi and James Patterson. The first one is Private India. You can read the review of the first book Private India by clicking here

The authors has yet again given us a fast paced thriller and I realised that I spent a bit of my time in completing all the 112 chapters in one go. I also found it real difficult to differentiate as to which chapters were penned by Ashwin Sanghi and James Patterson.

The book is divided into 3 parts namely Killer, Deliverer and Martyr.

Santhosh Wagh is the protagonist, If you have read the first book, you would have known by now. He is employed as Head of India Operations for a detective agency called PRIVATE whose boss is Jack Morgan. Santhosh is ably assisted by Nisha Gandhe who lost her husband recently and a single mother to Maya Gandhe. The other person who assisted Santhosh is Neel Mehra who is a criminologist.

The story also has few other important characters like Sharma - Commissioner of Police, Nikhil Kumar - Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Mohan Jaswal - Chief Minister of Delhi, Ram Chopra - Lt.Governor of Delhi, Jai Thakkar - CEO of ResQ, Samir Patel - Chairman of SurgiQuip, Iqbal Ibrahim - self confessed Doctor, Ajoy Guha - Media Anchor, Dr Roy.

The story begins with a cold murder and Private has been deployed by CM to find out as to who is behind these cold blooded murders. On the other hand Lt Governor along with CoP tries to stall their progress. The focus shifts from one person to the other when one after the other starts getting murdered.

In between, you would also get to see another character Dr.O.S.Rangoon. Who is this person and what significance does he have on the story?

Both Santhosh & Nisha gets into trouble and were in the verge of getting killed. Who saved them?

You also have another character Khan who makes an appearance all of a sudden. When you were deeply engrossed in the turn of events, when the killer gets revealed, you will be surprised for sure just like it happened to me because the killer was there right in front of us throughout the story but authors has framed it so brilliantly that we ever had slightest of doubt on this person.

Who is the killer? Why were so many lives being taken away mercilessly?

Do read this novel to find out all the details. I bet it is worth the money.

The book is available in leading bookstores offline and online, you can buy either from Amazon or Flipkart.

Don't let our kids miss out on classic Indian stories: Sudha Murty

Its Vasant Panchami today, the day students seek the blessings of Goddess Saraswati. Interestingly, Sudha Murthy has always credited Goddess Saraswati as her inspiration to write.

Taking the stage at Crossword Bookstores, Turner Road, Bandra, she epitomises simplicity, purpose and energy. The endearing saree clad author, is eager to talk about  her new book, “The Serpent’s Revenge: Unusual Tales from Mahabharata”, a book that comprises  25 tales from The Mahabharata.

In her charming introduction to the book, Murthy reiterates  that 'she was inspired her to write something  different from her previous versions of books." ‘

If so, then why the Mahabharata, an oft told story?

Murthy explained to a rapt audience, ”We know the  Mahabharata the story. I kept
on removing the important topics.--in Mahabharata the yuddha (war) is common, Draupadi's swayamvar is common, her vastraharan is common. My focus was on the lesser known facts. That's how I found the unusual stories and drafted it. If you are immersed in the subject, you'll get to know what to write, what sequence to write it in."

The author clearly sees the Mahabharata as a confluence of many tales, several of which are not very well-known. For instance; did you know  the tale of Yudhisthira and the dog on the pathway to heaven?

Kinjal Shah, CEO Crossword Bookstores expressed his joy at hosting the revered author. He said, " One of the foremost audiences we see at Crossword Bookstores is parents reading out to their children. Sudha Murthy's books are highly sought after by parents; and offer the right kind of reading material that every Indian family bonds over."

A Broken Man

Title - A Broken Man
Author - Akash Verma
Genre - Fiction
Publishers - Srishti Publishers and Distributors
ISBN - 978-93-82665-69-4

Have you ever imagined that there is a untold sorrow and misery on the renowned lyricist and writer - KK? The story opens with KK travelling in a luxury sedan to a upscale apartment. While the entire world celebrated his success, he was still reeling with melancholy.

He had a flashback. The flashback had a beautiful and unadulterated love in the name of Chhavi. KK hailed from Bihar and belonged to a lower caste while Chhavi's father was none other than Pandit Radhey Shankar Mishra who held an important position in Lok Shakthi Party.

Krishna(KK) and Chhavi were in college then and initially KK was pitted against Chhavi who was promoting LWSI to dethrone Gope who was backed by Bharatiya Samaj Party(BSP) in the local elections. An event turns the hostile Krishna to become close to Chhavi and they both fall in love with each other.

Destiny had a different version which made them separate but what happens in the end is a heart warming one. Though one would have come across a story with an ending like this, I liked this story in particular for the way in which it was written. I would not be surprised to see this as a movie with slight changes in the story.

Those were the days

Title - Those were the days
Author - N.S.Ravi
Genre - Non Fiction
Publications - Frog Books
ISBN - 978-93-52013-05-0

This book is surely one of its kind. Unlike other non-fiction, this book would very much appeal to you as a reader because the author has captured the real essence of our past. I was born in 1980 and hence I could relate most of the contents being mentioned in the book, if not all.

The author has literally covered all the day to day aspects which we have used and that seen a drastic change over a period of time which ranges from Buses, Rickshaws, Autos, Bicycles, Scooters, Cars, Post, Telephones, Mobiles, Teachers, Schools, Pens, Pencils, Ball Pens, Radios, Televisions, Music Systems. Calculators, Typewriters, Magazines, Comics, Novels, DL among lot of other thing.

I still remember getting my first landline connection with the recommendation letter from the then M.P. and also could recollect going to school in rickshaw. As clearly mentioned by the author, those days the name of the school did not matter much but the distance. My school was hardly few hundred metres away from my residence and we treated taking tuition as something which is meant only for average/poor students.

I could also remember getting the first mobile phone for my dad. It use to cost Rs.16 per minute for an outgoing call and Rs.8 per minute for an incoming call. It was still considered a great rate those days because it was initially pegged at Rs.64 and Rs.32 which was later brought down to Rs.32 and Rs.16 for outgoing and incoming calls. The only thing author did miss was the mention of the PAGER. I would have given it a miss as well as this technology was there only for 2 years to a greater extent before it was taken away by the mobile phones.

How I would forget mentioning about my first ever expensive pen - Parker which I bought it saving from my pocket money that was fr the frst time given to me when I went to college. It was just Rs.100 per month back then and the first ever Parker Pen I got was priced at Rs.225. I still preserve the bill and the pen till date and yes, I started collecting pens from then which has now grown to enormous and envious collection ranging from all leading brands like Parker, Sheaffer, Pierre Cardin, Mont Blanc, Tommy Hilfiger, Waterman, Lamy to name a few ranging from few hundreds to few thousands of rupees worth.

Author did mention about the guides. As a kid, we were also prescribed a book called Konar which almost had a near monopoly for Tamil Textbooks. I would say Konar, in fact had much better explanation than the real textbooks were available those days.

I was also overwhelmed about the mention of the letter in the book because as a kid, I too had lot of penpals from various countries and it was during the early 2000, I did still write letters and use to get letters from abroad literally every day. I still preserve those letters and how will I not mention about my stamp collection which started as a habit when I was 10 years old and though I did part away with huge collection when I was in late 20's, I still manage to hold a good collection.

Gone are the days when we use to watch movie only once in a day. Similarly the programs like Chitrahaar and DD news can never be forgotten, My first television was a black and white TV with doors to close and open followed by a color TV by Bharat and later on shifted to Videocon for few years and presently with Sony. I still remember renting VCP/VCR during the annual holidays as my uncle ran a video cassette hiring shop and it use to be fun.

My dad had Lambretta for few years before shifting his loyalty to Kinetic Honda which served for almost a decade before we settled with Honda Activa i. We also had a Premier Fiat which was used be elite those days.

Coming to magazines, I use to read Gokulam(English and Tamil), Champak, Chandamama, Balamitra, Ambulimama, Poonthalir

After reading the book, I realised as to how much patient we were in adopting to modern technology without having to complain about any inconveniences back in those days as we were programmed to live with it and I so wish to see the present generation to live up with the same kind of patience which would lead them to greater heights.

An awesome read. I basked on my past and would like to thank the author for helping me go past rejoicing my childhood and the beautiful memories associated with it.

I would end up saying that this book will be a great read for those who were born after 1960 but not limiting to the present generation who would surely want to take a glimpse at what exactly had happened a few decades ago making the present day, a most advanced and a sophisticated one.

The Bogus Read

Title - The Bogus Read
Author - Divyamaan
Genre - Fiction
Publisher - Frog Books
ISBN - 978-93-52017-44-7

This is the first time ever I laughed right from the beginning of the book till the end. The book is an excellent attempt by Divyamaan where he has used his imagination to bring out the utmost irony that is prevailing in various sectors like Politics, International Relations to name a few.

The story revolves around the group of friends Ravi,Param,Rohit,Prakhar and Karan who gave more importance to Counter Strike(CS) game rather than their studies. Despite their not so good attempt in exam preparations, they were surprised to see their names being featured in Top 10 when one of the semester results were announced.

On the other hand, the Indian Army which included Major Das, Brigadier Suryakant, Colonel Chauhan and Mehta were worried about the impending threat of take over of Indian Territories by Pakistan Army.

Surprisingly The Times of Bharat never carried this news and gave a small column only on their 30th page of some 120 odd page edition which was full of advertisements and the students group that were mentioned above took a vow to unveil the secret behind it. This leads to unveiling of various secrets and they eventually got the invite to meet Mr.N or Mr.Nation who was placed about PM and The President. Who is Mr.N?

The Indian Army gets the first victory by deploying DM007 method. What it is?

The book should be read as it is without giving importance or attachment to names being mentioned in the book which would make you understand the real irony. I must say it is really difficult for anyone to pen such a hilarious story without compromising on facts and quality and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

William Dalrymple & Anita Anand fascinate listeners during interactive session at Crossword Bookstores

It is not everyday that a venerable historian of William Dalrymple’s ilk and erudition is available for an interaction.

Naturally, Crossword Bookstores at Kemps Corner was buzzing with excited fans on Tuesday evening who had come to interact with acclaimed writer William Dalrymple and BBC journalist Anita Anand on their latest book Kohinoor: The Story of the World’s Most Infamous Diamond published by juggernaut books

In their talk Dalrymple and Anand spoke about their new discoveries around the diamond and bust many of the myths and legends surrounding the world’s most ‘infamous’ diamond.

We realized that the Kohinoor story is about passion, nationalism and pride and very little about facts, historical evidence and proof. That's why we decided to write a book that will not take sides on this debate but excavate the facts,” said Dalrymple.

"The irony is that we have the hardest substance in the world which is surrounded by insubstantial nonsense. We therefore laid out what we think are the true facts of the case," he added.

During the session, readers asked many interesting questions to both the authors.

One of the readers asked Anita Anand about the diamond being cut into two halves to which Anita had to say, ”one theory is that in those days they had a very fast spinning wheel to grind off the facets and the bits were burnt off. There are also people who claim to have chips from the diamond."

“Here's a story that readers can never have enough of! It's a heady mix of controversy, exaggeration, and mystery. Very excited to host William and Anita, for our readers, at Crossword," said Kinjal Shah, CEO Crossword Bookstores.

About the book

Kohinoor: The Story of the World’s Most Infamous Diamond unearths fascinating new information and is a gripping historical saga of loot, murder, torture, deceit and colonial greed. Using previously untranslated Sanskrit, Persian and Urdu sources, and the discoveries of modern gemologists, William Dalrymple and Anita Anand blow away the legends to reveal the Kohinoor’s true history – stranger, and more violent, than any fiction.

The story sweeps from the century the Kohinoor spent embedded in the Mughals’ fabulous Peacock Throne to the months it spent hidden in a prison cell in a remote Afghan fort; from the years it languished unrecognised on a mullah’s desk, used as a paperweight, through to the torture chamber where a Persian prince was crowned in molten lead in an attempt to extract the truth about the gem’s hiding place. Once worn on Ranjit Singh’s turban, Duleep Singh’s armband and Queen Victoria’s crown, it is now locked in the Tower of London, where it continues to arouse passions as India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran all demand its return.
