Book Review - Mind Master : Winning Lessons from a Champion's Life

Title - Mind Master : Winning Lessons from a Champion's Life
Author - Viswanathan Anand
Genre - Autobiography
Publisher - Hachette India
ISBN - 978-93-5195-150-6

When Viswanathan Anand played for the World Championship title in 2013 in Hyatt Regency, Chennai, I badly wanted to see the match not because it featured the then World Champion Magnus Carlsen but to meet my childhood inspiration and idol Vishy(as he is fondly called by his fans). I did not get the ticket/pass but little did I knew by then that I would get to meet this legend on 4 different occasions including the book signing session of his autobiography.

I picked this book out of sheer interest and the reading proved to be worth my time and money. When you get to know up close about the Five Time World Champion, who being the India's first GM and has inspired to produce as many as 64(as the number of squares on the Chess board) till date talks about the volume though he humbly says that he has played a little part in inspiring the youngsters to take up the game.

The chapters of the book were interestingly named as the title namely:

1. Ditching the Ladder : Of Gut, Heart and A Winning Idea
2. Sticky Notes : Madras, Manila, Madrid and Everything In between
3. The Art Of Remembering : Hooks, Hacks and Serendipity
4. Win Some Lose Some : Emotions and The Power Of Objectivity
5. Gathering The Troops : How to make Preparation count and Tactics work
6. New York New York : The Making of a Champion
7. The Gift and The Grit : Making Talent Work Hard
8. Mining The Mind and Machines : Decision Making, Date and A New Giant on the block
9. Bonn Again : Finding Beauty in Risk
10. The Adversity Advantage : A volcanic ash cloud, a Road Trip and a Title
11. Two Cities One State : Battling Learned Helplessness
12. Staying Alive : Of today's wins and tomorrow's horizons

Each and every chapter is a gem in its own accord. I could sense his pride, achievement, hours of hard work that has gone into it coupled with passion, grit and sacrifice. He has also had a tinge of sarcasm imbibed in few places. The book begins slowly like a flight in the runway, gathers gradual momentum and takes off and after hovering in the sky for a while, makes a landing which is common for any person - as it cannot defy Physics/Newton's Law.

His revelation of having photographic memory and not contextual memory would make his fans feel better, even in case, he could not recollect their faces(despite meeting them on several occasion). He openly admits that he even forgot his wedding date and how he keeps forgetting little things mostly the mouse pads and the gemstone rings which his mother got it for him. This shows even the Word Champion had some issues to cope up with.

His neutral stance during the split of the Chess organizing body and how he did not support Gary Kasparov who stood for the FIDE Presidential elections were a classic. His mention about Manuel Aaron, Singer SP Balasubramaniam shows how their contribution had left a mark on him.

Do you know?

Vishy started as a Tennis Player.

He was asked by the organizers of the contest to not to take part in it anymore and he could take home as many books as he wanted.

He talks about the intervention of machines and AI(I had the privilege to listen to his speech regarding this first hand during the launch of ChessKid platform in Chennai) and how even he had to consult a sports psychologist once.

There are many such interesting events that has happened in his life which has been compiled in such a beautiful way that you would even forget of having spent a good 3-4 hours in reading this book. There is no wonder that this book is placed at #1 in the category of Sports on Amazon(Bestseller) as of today - 20th Dec,2019.

Vishy has inspired us for more than 3 decades and he would continue to do so for few more decades through this book, for sure....

This book is available on Amazon and in all leading bookstores, offline.

Food Review - The Big Hit(now open at Thoraipakkam)

About the Restaurant:
The Big Hit Restaurant had a soft launch today & I was one among the lucky few to be invited to the event along with other fellow bloggers.
This restaurant is located on Thoraipakkam. If you’re coming via Adyar, it is after MNM Jain College and comes on the right side. You can access this on Mais and reach there easily.
The restaurant is located on the 2nd floor. Ambiance was good. They played a mix of old & new Bollywood numbers. Lighting was good. However when there was a temporary power cut, the they immediately opened the blinds which allowed the natural light to come inside s was such was really bright & good.
Seating arrangements were done in such a way that there is no trouble accessing the tables from one end to the other.
The property also has co-working space apart from Open Lounge on the terrace. The open lounge could hold 300-350 pax.
If you’re looking to hold a meet, get together, functions etc., this is the option you need to look out for.

About the Food:
We were served with delicacies which were good. It started with Dahi Poori, Pani Poori which were really good.
There was tomato & corn soup. Liked it as well.
Mojitos were served in different crockeries & combination. I liked the lemonade & swimming pool Mojito.
We were also given American Potato, Pineapple Sufiana, Salt & Pepper Corn, Athese Aloo, Gul Jar Paneer Tikka apart from Veg Pizza.
Liked the paneer. It was super soft. The other dishes were equally good.
Post this, I went for main course followed by desserts. I had channa, pasta, Veg Dum Biryani & few desserts. Thai Green Curry was served in the end.
Veg Buffet is priced at ₹625+Taxes
Non Veg Buffet is priced at ₹675+Taxes
You’ll love their food. For this price, I felt Non-Veg buffet is a killer because they had Biryani, Chicken & Fish Gravy apart from Crab curry. Go for it

Food Review - Chocolicious Evening at Chocolate Heaven

About the Restaurant:
The Chocolate Heaven Chennai is located on Pantheon Road - just next to Fruit Shop on Greams Road. If you are visiting in the evening, do not trust the map but your instinct since it is one way from 5-7pm and I as well as my friends has to go on a roundabout until we found this place on our own 😂
They have parking facility for 2/4 wheeler. This is a cozy restaurant which is good for get together, small party, hangout with friends etc.,
Restaurant has unique tables. If you look at it in detail you will find out as to what makes them different. No prizes for guessing.
They maintain pretty cool temperature inside and the staffs are fast. They serve the items with a smile on their face. We had difficulties in finding the name of the dishes but that isn’t an issue here. We loved the food the most. A separate post is coming up next for that, as usual.

I have also made a short video inside the cafe.

Highly recommended 😍

About the Food:
What did we have?
Cucumber mojito
Lavander basil mojito
Pizza arrabiata
Creamy four cheese spaghetti pasta
Panner makhani pizza
Chilli garlic potato pops
Mango basil margarita
Spinach garlic fusilli pasta
Brownie pizza
Nutella pancake
Heaven famous pancake
Chocolate x3 sundae
Triple decker choco fudge
We were extremely satisfied with each and every dish/delicacy. Like they say, it was a perfect impression on the very first item that was served to us - Cucumber Mojito.
Each and every dish that followed next made us to say “Vera Level”. They were crafted(cooked) with perfection which made us to drool over them again.
I do not want to pick up on a particular dish but in general as their name implies, we had a lovely time tasting their chocolate delicacies which includes Pizza, Pancake, Sundae & Fudge.
If you’re having a sweet tooth or crave for Chocolate, you wouldn’t want to miss this place.
P.S. They also have an outlet in Alwarpet

Book Review - Stories Of Us

Title - Stories Of Us
Author - Bobby Sachdeva
Genre - Fiction
Publisher - Pan Macmillan India
ISBN - 978-93-89109-02-3

This book by Bobby Sachdeva is a brilliant collection of 41 short stories which you would finish it in no time. When I say this, I am confident about it and the content it has which could make any of the reader to keep hooked from the beginning till the end. It was no wonder for me when I read that some of the stories would be made into short films.

The content of each and every story is different. It is gripping. Though it comes under the term "Fiction", the story reflects the day to day happenings in our life and would make you to think yourself twice about some of the beliefs. Do note that author through his stories is not ridiculing it but is trying to provoke your inner conscience to question about those. This is what even he does it in the end of every story by asking few questions which is more relevant.

The stories were presented to you in such a way that you would never feel bored but feel inspired. He has touched upon wide variety of topics which includes but not limited to Philanthropy, Horoscope, Third Gender, Vastu Shastra, Euthanasia, GST, Demonetisation, Pets, Compatibility, Family Relationships to name a few.

Trust me, each and every one has hit on bulls eye and the message he wanted to convey cannot be put forth in a way better than this. A master narration is what this book is all about...

Author - Kalinga Seneviratne

An enlightening book when it comes to the field of Media. We all have had our notion as to whether the media is genuine and what we see is true. This book opens up the field of Media to us and shows in great detail as to how this field has evolved, transformed and what are the factors that determines the news that is aired in/via the Media.

One must not forget to read the abbreviations which occupies the first 2 pages(4 sides). This would make you familiarize with the short forms that were used throughout the book. If you are not sure about any of them even after reading it, you can always go back to get it checked.

The book is divided into 10 chapters. Each of them analyses certain aspects in details. There were lot of real time evens that were given in this book. This would enable us to understand much deeper as to what exactly has happened in the past, happening in the present and may happen in the future. Food Review - Swaad Anusaar, Anna Nagar

SwaadAnusaar is located very next to SBI on Shanthi Colony, Anna Nagar.
This is a new restaurant which has come up in this happening locality. Best part is their food (coming up on my next post). Staffs are relatively new & getting trained but not the Chefs. Moreover one of the business partners who has the prior experience of running a restaurant just opposite to VIT,Vellore is an amazing book himself and has the experience of handling 100+ customers at a time.
Visit them once if you’re in Anna Nagar it in that vicinity. You’ll never be disappointed. They are tying up with food delivery companies shortly.Otherwise they deliver the food within a radius of 1km.
They have a perfect selfie setup outside the restaurant. Try it. Picture will definitely look great 🙂 Do not forget to take your bill because when you visit them next time, by just showing the previous bill, you can get 10% discount. This offer is valid until 31st Jan,2020.

About the Food:

What I liked the most is their tasty dishes. They use mineral water. They use branded ghee. They use wheat. They use high quality basmati rice. So, as you could see, there is no compromise with regards to quality.
At the same time, they haven’t priced the dishes on a higher side. The owners are contended with lesser margin & hence they say it with pride that for a couple, they could finish off their lunch or dinner for around ₹400.
They have introduced Thali at an unbeatable price of ₹150. Most of the items are priced much lesser. No item does exceed ₹250 max. They offer variety of cuisine which also includes Chaat, Chinese, Continental to name a few.
What did we have today?
Pani Puri
Bhel Puri
Dahi Puri
Wheat Roti(butter) aka Phulka
Paneer Manchurian
Burnt Garlic Fried Rice
Papad
Grilled Sandwich
Cardamom Tea
I have liked all of them as it gave the authentic taste of the selected items. The ingredients of each and every dish was amazing. Though they did ask us for scope of improvement, we did not give any as we couldn’t find one 😁
Paneer Manchurian almost tasted like a Chicken Manchurian. Phulka was amazing and so as the fried rice. We ended with an amazing cardamom tea.
Listen to what the co-owner Mr Manish has to say about his restaurant.

Please Note - This is a Pure Veg Restaurant and can accommodate 40 people at a time !!

Book Review - Women In Science And Technology : Confronting Inequalities

Title - Women In Science And Technology : Confronting Inequalities
Author - Namrata Gupta
Genre - Sociology
Publisher -Sage Publishing India P Ltd
ISBN - 978-93-5328-748-1

We speak about Women Empowerment these days in many forums. We conduct or take part in debates as to how to improve the contribution of women to the society. There is no denial to the fact that the role played by Women has improved considerably over the past two decades or so but is this enough? To put it in other words, are the Women's contribution in various fields especially in Science and Technology is up to the mark? This is what is author Namrata Gupta trying to decipher for us in this book.

I was stunned by the references she has had to go through before coming out with this book since they run in few hundreds, if not thousands. The book is divided into 5 chapters namely:

1. Indian Culture, Gender and S&T Education
2. Higher Education in S&T : Gendered Domains & Institutes
3. Women in S&T Professions
4. Gender in S&T Professions
5. Undoing Gender-Based Inequality

Through each and every book, Namrata tried to decode as to what is doing good and what is not. The pointers in each and every chapter are real vast. If you love the figures(numbers), you would surely fall in love with this book. Since the title demands certain aspects, these cannot be expressed better than in numbers and percentage. It is not difficult to remember these figures unless you are allergic to them or have not paid proper attention while reading the book.

The book is a culmination of facts and figures. It has derived information from various sources and has been presented in such a way that you wouldn't want to miss even a single page. The idea is genuine and the ways in which women were suppressed in the past and how they are slowly coming up breaking the myth of "Men are superficial" has been captured real well.

There were various facts which came as a real wonder for me. I am giving a few which could evoke your interest in this book, for sure.

a. In 1820s ad 1830s, there were no girls in traditional village schools or in the schools of higher learning.
b. All India Women's Conference(AIWC) , founded in 1927, perceived Women's education as important for women's equality.
c. Women in Engineering were unheard of atleast till the 1940s.
d. Leela George and A Lalitha were the first to graduate, entering the College of Engineering at Guindy in 1940 and passing out in 1943.
e. Kadambini Basu was the first woman to graduate from a Medical College, Bengal - in 1886.

There are hundreds of such facts in this book which makes it an interesting read.

The reasons as to why Women do not take up certain courses or why their pay package is less when compared to their men counterpart has been explained in detail. If you are working towards "Women Empowerment", this book shouldn't be missed for sure.

Book Review - India's Foreign Policy Dilemma over Non-Alignment 2.0

Title - India's Foreign Policy Dilemma over Non-Alignment 2.0
Author - Sudhanshu Tripathi
Genre - International Relations
Publisher - Sage Publications P Ltd
ISBN - 978-93-532-8642-2

If you are a political science student or the one who is interested in International relations, this book will come as a boon to you. I picked up Commerce/Economics group during my high school out of sheer interest and excelled in them including the law papers in the University level and also during the CS(Company Secretaryship) - Intermediate Examinations. Hence I do know the importance of these which forms the basis of strengthening the nation.

It was good to recollect my memories about India's present foreign relationship policy which is based on "Panchsheel" formulated by the then PM of India Shri. Jawaharlal Nehru. Though it is still relevant to some extent at the present moment, they way in which it could be improved has been explained really well by the author.

The author, Sudhanshu Tripathi, who himself is a Political Science professor in Rajarsh Tandon Open University(UPRTOU) and Director(Incharge) at School of Social Sciences, UPRTOU has proved his expertise by comparing the relationships of the past with the present. Th bibliography in the end alone runs for close to 20 pages which shows how much of references were sourced from hundreds of books written by eminent in this field. These were presented coupled with his expertise knowledge which shows that it is time for India to move beyond. The comparison between the action/step taken by Shri. Jawaharlal Nehru with that of Shri. Narendra Modi needs a special mention.

Though author is not critical about any of the actions taken till date, he puts it subtly that the steps taken by the present PM with regards to strengthening the ties between various nations including Israel, Iran, Arab Emirates apart from maintaining a cordial relationship with USA, Russia and China shows as to how informed the PM is. It is also a testimony to his achievements that he has been bestowed with so many awards by various nation. The aggressive "Chauvinism" policy adopted by the BJP has yielded some results. Unlike their predecessor, they are not keeping quiet but get into action be it response to Uri / Pulawama Attacks or Kargil War or destroying the terror camps as soon as Wg Cdr Abhinandan was released by Pakistan.

India still has a long way to go with regards to modernizing the weapons. Author points out subtly that only with the support of these, a nation could ascertain its supremacy over various issues. You must note that he is not advocating the weaponization but has put forth his thoughts as to how important this is as it cannot be ignored or taken lightly. The "Make In India", "Digital India", "Smart Cities", "Startup India" finds a mention in the book.

Various internal and external factors that affects India's foreign policy and ways in which India could improve its relationship with neighboring countries especially with China is explained in detail in this book. By the way do you know that PM Narendra Modi was the first to visit Mongolia, Nepal(after 17 years since the visit by the last PM), Sri Lanka(after a decade), Fiji(after 33 years), Canada(after 40 years) and so on. These signifies that India is already in the right path of enhancing the external affairs relationship which would go a long way in strengthening the bond/ties with the other countries. It is high time that India starts considering about the Version 2.0 of Non-Alignment Movement(NAM)

Book Review - The Love Riots

Title - The Love Riots
Author - DelhiBelly
Genre - Romance(Fiction)

When I saw this book listed on Wattpad, I did not think twice but to pick it up instantly.

Why?

I was intrigued by the title and secondly, the unique cover page and the pseudo name of the author. Moreover, this is the first time ever, I had read a book on one of the world's leading platforms when it comes to stories - Wattpad!

First 9 chapters of the stories were FREE and this would automatically make the readers to pick up the interest to continue further with the remaining parts. Yes. This story comes under the paid section. If you are not herd about this platform or not aware as to how it works, download the app which is available on iOS and on Playstore. You can also access them via your desktop/laptop through the browser. There are hundreds of stories which are available for FREE as well. I paid 30 coins to gain access to the rest of the stories. As you could see from the picture listed above, it would have otherwise cost me 60 coins. I saved 50% of the coins through this deal.

The story has 28 chapters and if you love romance fiction, you would surely fall in love with this story. It revolves around the character Chitra aka Chitralekha who was from an affluent family but takes up the work in a magazine to stand on her own legs. This is where she gets to meet Zahir Hosain who was into teaching Political Science and was also associated with an NGO. While the first meet was about Chitra interviewing Zahir, they take off with their relationship soon after.

One of Chitra's friend was going through testing times whereas Chitra herself lands up in trouble when she comes to know about some trivial information about Zahir.

What was that?

When things starts settling down or being reconciled, a riot breaks up in the locality where the wannabe couples gets attacked by "Love Jihad" mobs.

Did the romance between Chitra and Zahir survived these?

Read the story to find out more. I was impressed by the writing style of the author which was unique and the characterization was done in such a way that you would not feel bored at any given point but to finish the book in one go. The relationship between the lead characters were portrayed so well that I felt like watching a movie. I am looking forward to more such novels from the author in the coming days.

How to dress up for a Casino Party?

In the old days, if people wanted to get together, they would set up tea in the backyard or chat and spend time together in a public place. But the man of this generation is well educated and advanced. He is also very busy. That is why man has been separated from men. So, people are now celebrating parties under the name of "get together". From schoolchildren to seniors, from office workers to politicians ... everybody do parties.  In the meantime, this "Casino party" is going to be crazy people. At this party, some games are played so that people can spend their time as well as entertain. Only money is fake in this "Casino Party". Now, what is a Casino and how reviews of Indian betting sites will help you? So this is pure gambling. The only place to visit with a lot of money, dancing strange women, eating and drinking whatever you want (gambling area).

But not everyone can go to the Casino! That is why a Casino Party or Casino Night Party is planned. This party should look like a casino, as well as a themed casino dress code.
But the difference is that in real casinos, gambling is played with real money, and this casino party is played with fake money or chips. This kind of casino party has certain costumes for people.
